Throughout my career, I struggled to find a mentor. So I had to learn by failing mostly. Luckily very late in my career I found a manager who pushed me beyond my threshold. He never acted as mentor but he always challenged me. Only reason you need a mentor is for the alternate perspective on the problem statement. As humans we suffer from self bias a lot and thus we are wired to assume that what we know is the only way to do stuff, here where the mentor comes in & can nudge you in the right direction.
