The fundamentals don’t change, the tactics do. With that in mind, be wary of shiny new objects that won’t move the needle. I tend to assess things with a quick checklist first: - Can I still reach my target audience? Efficiently / effectively? - Does it impact cost? Resource / Time? - Will it make a significant difference if we “lean in”? - Can we test it with a small piece of budget first? These are just a few of the questions I ask myself, but after years on the front line, I’ve found that it’s not possible (for your sanity!) to change every other day, but focus on 2-3 macro changes that will allow you to see an impact.

It is not possible to be an expert on every social media channel. In order to keep your sanity, I recommend becoming a T-Shaped social marketer with shallow functional knowledge of every channel that is relevant for your business and target audience, and deep knowledge of the main channel. Hire, outsource and keep a close network with experts for every other important channel for your business. Keep a phone line open for emergencies, but turn off your notifications outside of work hours.
