OK, yes, of course you can learn the basics of design online. Just like you can learn to make a soufflé by watching a YouTube video. But managing to end up with an actual soufflé doesn't make you a chef, and online tools are not a substitute for what an actual designer can do. That said, you can learn foundations of form, typography, and color theory. Because there is a real difference between design that gets results (which is the definition of good commercial design) and the other kind. And it's also super fun to learn.

This is difficult 😎😅 1. Would one have common sense, first (again)? 2. Talent comes after that. 3. Don't copy your competitor. If you so want to - copy or learn the strategy. Also remember: A. It's a tad difficult to know if it's really working for them - as long as you don't hear word-to-mouth; no I am not talking about social - real people speaking word to mouth about it. B. If its working for them, it doesn't necessarily mean it will work for your brand. 4. Quirky, Sense of humor helps. 5. Strong wisdom, experience to be preferred over data. Data at most of the times is mindless and in most cases an indicator only.
