A network operations center (NOC) is a centralized hub where IT professionals monitor and manage the performance, security, and availability of an organization's network infrastructure. A NOC is essential for ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of IT services and applications to end users, customers, and partners. In this article, you will learn about the key components of a NOC and how they work together to support IT operations management.
A NOC typically consists of various roles and responsibilities, depending on the size and complexity of the network. The NOC Manager oversees the overall operations, budget, and staff of the NOC, while the NOC Engineer performs troubleshooting, configuration, maintenance, and optimization. Additionally, a NOC Analyst monitors and analyzes network performance, security, and availability using various tools and dashboards. The NOC Technician provides technical support and assistance to NOC engineers and analysts, as well as end users and customers. Finally, a NOC Coordinator coordinates the communication and collaboration between the NOC and other IT teams, vendors, and stakeholders.

In addition to the above suggestion, I strongly believe the success of any NOC department fully depends on their team work with other departments of the company such as the finance, business team and billing team. This is because half of the issues I have encountered on my day to day activity is business related such as an operator or service provider will just disconnect us and troubleshooting and escalation will be prolonged until the business team intervanes and settles the monetary aspect before service is restored immediately.

People: The most important component of any NOC is the people who work there. NOC operators must have a deep understanding of network infrastructure and technologies. They must also be able to work quickly and efficiently to resolve problems and keep the network running smoothly.
A NOC utilizes various tools and technologies to monitor and manage the network infrastructure, such as network monitoring software or hardware for collecting and displaying network data, network management software or hardware for configuring and optimizing devices and systems, network security software or hardware to protect against unauthorized access, attacks, and breaches, network automation software or hardware for automating repetitive or complex tasks, and network documentation software or hardware for recording and maintaining information.

Key components of a NOC include: Monitoring tools: Collect data about the network, such as traffic levels, device performance, & error messages, to identify potential problems & track network performance. Network management systems (NMS): Manage and control network devices, such as routers, switches, & firewalls, to configure devices, collect data, and generate alerts when problems are detected. Ticketing system: Tracks and manages network-related incidents, requests, & changes, assigning tickets, tracking progress, & generating reports. Personnel: Network engineers & techs who monitor, manage, & troubleshoot the network, requiring a deep understanding of the network & its mgt tools. May include SOC, DCOC and a customer support center.

Solar Wind NMS is a great example of cost effective Network Monitoring tool. Apart from monitoring tools it is having deffrent Modules to manage and maintain smooth operation of small and large enterprise Networks.
A NOC follows various processes and procedures to ensure the quality and consistency of network operations, such as incident management, problem management, change management, service level management, and continual service improvement. Incident management involves identifying, logging, categorizing, prioritizing, resolving, and closing network incidents like outages or disruptions. Problem management is focused on analyzing, diagnosing, preventing, and eliminating the root causes of network incidents. Change management requires planning, approving, implementing, and reviewing network changes such as upgrades or migrations. Service level management consists of defining, measuring, reporting, and improving the network service levels like availability and reliability. Finally, continual service improvement is about monitoring, evaluating, and enhancing the network service quality and customer satisfaction.

I strongly believe incident tracking is very important because it enables the NOC engineer on duty to first of all get a grasp of how the NOC performed and pending and closed cases. This would enable faster resolution time. Unfortunately, my employer does not have an automated incident tracking system, rather we the NOC engineers are constantly manually inputting all NOC related issues, escalating to the far end when necessary and follow up for prompt resolution. I do not see this as a setback because I believe for one to master any technology, knowing how the technology works in case it breaks down is an advantage and an opportunity to bring in your experience and expertise.

Based on the fact that the user community is more often connected via internet/cloud than ever before, makes that the intelligence of networks are built around SD-WAN, high bandwidth Broadband internet accesses (more than 1) and SASE. Processes will overtime be offered via Platform Services where everything is automated to a maximum. Processes in the NOC will evolve towards only structural problem management and reporting. SLA will tend to disappear since every site will be connected to 2, 3 or more diversified internet connections even combined by LEO (Starlink/OneWeb, etc.) type of solutions. AIOps will drive processes and procedures.

Adhering to standards and best practices is essential for NOCs to ensure compliance and alignment of network operations with the organization's goals and objectives. Common standards and best practices include ITIL, a framework of best practices for delivering IT services and managing IT processes; ISO/IEC 20000, a standard for IT service management; COBIT, a framework of best practices for governing and managing IT resources and processes; and NIST, a set of standards and guidelines for enhancing the security and resilience of IT systems and networks.

NOC standards and safe practices are most times overlooked by some employers from the fee data centers I have visited where network cables are just flying all over the place. This is why my employer has taken the initiative to to first get all the NOC managers ISO certified and very soon, I will be trained on this.

One thing I've learnt throughout my career, especially in a third world country is that standards and best practices aren't even enforced in most companies, worse yet, they aren't aligned to the objectives and goals of the company. As a result, the NOC functions haphazardly without proper direction and this leads to burnout for NOC staff. As an NOC engineer, you'd have to come up with the standards and best practices as per world standards and enforce them to the entire organization, that is if your executive committee even understands why you need to implement the enforcement. In most cases, standards and best practices end up not being taken seriously and this becomes a frustration to the NOC engineer.
A NOC offers a variety of benefits and challenges for IT operations management. For instance, improved network performance, security, and availability can lead to higher customer satisfaction and retention. Additionally, reduced network downtime, errors, and costs can result in lower operational expenses and higher revenue. Furthermore, enhanced network visibility, control, and optimization can enable better decision making and planning. Moreover, increased network agility, scalability, and innovation can facilitate faster adaptation and growth. On the other hand, managing the complexity and diversity of network devices, systems, and technologies requires specialized skills and knowledge. Keeping up with the changing network demands and expectations necessitates constant monitoring and improvement. Balancing the network stability and flexibility requires careful planning and execution of network changes. Lastly, aligning the network operations with the business goals and objectives necessitates effective communication and collaboration.

As security becomes of paramount importance in most enterprises today, it's no more possible to manage network and security operations in SILOs. Hence the need for a truly integrated technology operations center catering to real-time network monitoring while also being able to be the first line of defence against security threats. Most of the monitoring platform service providers allow for creating dashboards and real-time view of the IT Infrastructure estate health and also the threat monitoring statistics. This in turn allows for creation of an integrated monitoring function managing network and security as the first layer of defence.

I strongly believe for any NOC unit to be successful, the team members should continuously strive to increase their knowledge in this field because the field of NOC is vast and the technology involved is fast evolving and one need to keep abreast with the latest. Also, networking with other intellectual like minds always go a long way and making meaningful connections such as attending workshops and webinars where other NOC engineers can all sit together and discuss some of the pressing issues they have encountered, just as the saying goes, a problem shared is half solved. And lastly, customer feedback is asset that should be part of NOC because this would help grade the success or failure of a NOC unit.
