If you work in information technology (IT), you may be wondering how to advance your career and get a promotion. IT is a competitive and dynamic field that requires constant learning and adaptation. However, simply doing your job well may not be enough to impress your managers and peers. You need to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT by following some effective strategies. Here are six ways to show that you are ready to take on more responsibilities and challenges in IT.
One of the most important ways to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT is to update your skills regularly. Technology changes rapidly, and you need to keep up with the latest trends, tools, and best practices. You can update your skills by taking online courses, attending workshops, reading blogs and books, or joining professional communities. You should also seek feedback from your colleagues and mentors on your strengths and areas for improvement. Updating your skills will show that you are proactive, curious, and committed to your professional development.

Often we assume delivering everything that was assigned to me, will get me in to the next role but that does nothing much in career progression. If you want a promotion look around, compare your responsibilities and and deliverables with someone in senior role than you, find the gaps. Reach out to your manager, have these gaps made visible to him and then work with your manager to ensure those gaps get filled. Once you have ticked all the check boxes you will be promotion ready. Rest will be your manager's job

If you are fairly new to IT or need to brush up your skills, start by identifying a single area you want to master. Envision yourself as an expert in that area. Then, create a plan and set SMART goals. Use all available resources: get certified, stay up-to-date on the news, talk to people with experience, join online communities, etc... Recognize that this is a lifelong journey and you're competing with everyone else.

Another way to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT is to showcase your achievements. You should document your projects, tasks, and results, and highlight how they contributed to the goals and objectives of your organization. You should also quantify your achievements with metrics, such as time saved, money earned, or problems solved. Showcasing your achievements will show that you are competent, reliable, and valuable to your organization.

You should balance your time between learning and showcasing. Just don't get carried away with showcasing, since you are not spending that time learning. In general, I agree that it is important to show the world what you have achieved and what you are capable of. By becoming a true expert in any domain, you will naturally add value, and success will follow.
A third way to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT is to take on more challenges. You should look for opportunities to expand your scope of work, take on new roles, or lead initiatives. You should also volunteer for tasks that are outside your comfort zone, such as presenting to clients, collaborating with other departments, or mentoring junior staff. Taking on more challenges will show that you are confident, adaptable, and willing to learn new things.

Clear communication is a key skill everywhere. You don’t need to be perfect in english or any other particular language but you should be able to convey the things to every kind of audience. This is very important skill where people lacks most. Communication makes a person different from crowd.

Communication in IT is far and away the easiest way to distinguish yourself from the pack. For most leaders in business technology, is this mystical department, where money goes in, and outcomes appear. If you’re able to describe, not just the work that was done in layman’s terms, but the impact to the business, then your leaders will scramble to give you more responsibility because you make their lives easier.
A fifth way to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT is to solve problems creatively. You should be able to identify, analyze, and resolve issues that arise in your work, using logical thinking, critical thinking, and creativity. You should also be able to propose innovative solutions that meet the needs and expectations of your organization and customers. You should also test, evaluate, and improve your solutions, using data and feedback. Solving problems creatively will show that you are analytical, resourceful, and customer-oriented.
A sixth way to demonstrate your readiness for a promotion in IT is to demonstrate leadership. You should be able to inspire, motivate, and guide others, as well as yourself, towards a common vision and goal. You should also be able to delegate, empower, and support others, as well as accept responsibility and accountability for your actions. You should also be able to handle conflict, change, and stress, as well as celebrate success and learn from failure. Demonstrating leadership will show that you are influential, responsible, and resilient.

You can show leadership from any role. Show that you can do things without being asked. Take the initiative to show that you can do things without being told.

Find an IT professional (a coach) outside your company who can engage in open conversations with you from time to time and give you some honest feedback and advice on how to proceed with your career.

Don’t hoard knowledge if you’re looking to get promoted. I have had a few conversations with HR Directors over the years “If X doesn’t share his knowledge with other team members how are you going to promote X as you won’t be able to backfill within the team as they won’t have the knowledge.”
