I would, similarly, set annual goals but they related to what I wanted to get out of the project for that year. The goals typically touched on 3 different areas: 1) Expanding my Knowledge about the client’s business, markets, and competitors, 2) Establishing new client relationships and strengthening existing ones, 3) Participating in the development of a long-term account/engagement strategy - identifying initiatives that I could add value to.
Another way to stay motivated is to acknowledge and celebrate your small wins along the way. Small wins are the milestones, achievements, and feedback that show your progress and value. Celebrating small wins helps you boost your morale, reinforce your motivation, and appreciate your efforts. This is a particularly important point for early- and mid-career staff. In addition to putting myself forward to take on new sub-projects and tasks - gaining new skills and experiences in the process - I utilized long-term projects as an opportunity to build lasting client relationships. Building and maintaining relationships with key clients is key to be viewed as a senior manager/partner/managing director candidate. Work with the project executive to identify client relationships that need to be developed. Craft a “call plan” and determine the catalyst for each relationship. If done under the auspices of the project executive, it can reflect very positively on you.
A sixth way to stay motivated is to remember your purpose and why you chose consulting as your career. Your purpose is the vision, mission, and values that drive your work and inspire you. Remembering your purpose helps you connect your work to your passion, meaning, and impact. You can remember your purpose by revisiting your goals, reflecting on your achievements, or sharing your story.
